...that Ares would show up to stop her in Looking Death in the Eye from stabbing herself with her sword? I mean, if her and Gabrielle had planned
to fake their deaths, she had to have known he would stop her or her death would not have been 'fake' of course.

Because Xena knows everything!
Actually I thought that Xena knew Ares well enough that she correctly assumed he would be monitoring all of the events going on with her at that time and would never stand by and allow her to kill herself without trying to intervene. Yes, she took a risk that she could have been wrong in her assumptions but she made the very high percentage play that he would show up exactly when he did.

She probably sensed his presence and knew he's stop her. I imagine that her initial idea was just to take the "poison" but once she realized Ares
was there she saw the opportunity for a display that would make her "suicide" even more convincing to the gods. Maybe she also thought that if she
tried to take "poison" right away Ares would take it from her, so the attempted self-skewering was a diversion. A feint, sort of.
Actually for me a better question is, how did she know he wouldn't stop her from drinking Death's Tears? And why did it never occur to her that he was not just going to leave her body to rot on the beach?

And why did it never occur to her that he was not just going to leave her body to rot on the beach? good point cos he could have done worse (he could have buried her or even burnt her and she could have never came back) but l as Moycullen said she's Xena, she knows everything! (Ive always been amazed by xena's ability to foresee everyone of her enemies'actions/moves or even thoughts  )

I just wondered if she counted on Ares turning up. I mean with him there it made it look more realistic.

Still doesn't explain why she didn't bank on being trapped in an ice cave for 25 years, and didn't think about Ares possibly burying her...yikes.
Thank god they went with the ice cave.

Well no...I guess she was expecting Octavius to take them away. He did ride up afterwards and know of the plan.
