I quite identify with the "noble goddess" part, and you are also right in contrasting her with Ares. That's the way she was portrayed in Greek mythology, the goddess of war waged with reason and therefore victorious, as opposed to Ares, who only enjoyed fighting for fighting's sake, never really caring what the result was. I also agree about the Xenaverse-Athena's motivations being understandable. After all, one of the most attractive features of Greek mythology (at least for me ) is the imperfectness of the deities, whose flaws (just like all their traits of character) are very much like ours. So Athena's S5 actions are plausible... but I don't think (or maybe I just don't like to think - as I've said before, I am rather biased) they're probable from the mythical-Athena point of view. I like to think her rational side would prevail in a situation of the twilight-of-the-gods-prophecy kind. To me, she has always been the goddess of wisdom more than of war. And of arts, of course. To conclude, my image of Athena would be one of a noble, dignified, self-confident, resolved, but also human, smart and ingenious woman (acted by Paris, whom I really liked as Athena). A bit too idealised, coming to think of it... There should definitely be some weakness to her...she could be too stubborn, perhaps? I don't know... Suggestions are welcome! I love and admire the Athena you come to know through the mythology. Don't care much at all for her the way she was portrayed on the show. But, had we seen her prior to her life being threatened, to which her reaction was in some ways understandable, I might have been able to buy it more. If she had been shown as a wise and reasonable goddess, we would have had a bigger understanding for her plan and her reasoning. It would have been suggested that Eve really was bad news and that conflict would have been incredibly fun to watch! As far as mythology goes, we should have seen a more calm and collected goddess. Someone who looked at the situation from all the angles and not just focused on 'the child must die'. The fight-for-your-lives-we're-doomed-attitude that she sported rhymed very ill with what she stands for, in my mind. The show has never had a die-hard respect for how it portrayed the gods so of course this is to be expected, but if Ares, god of war, could live with the idea of Eve not being killed, so should the goddess of wisdom and reason. I was a bit uncomfortable seeing her so one-sided. Refusing to even consider another way to resolve things. Especially since there wasn't really anything to resolve at that time. Nor later, for that matter. I understand why, but I always kind of wondered about Ares and FIN. He showed up twice before when she was about to kill herself and stopped her. And as a god im guessing he would know where she is and what shes up to most of the time. But yeah, I know it wouldnt have been right in the story and everything. Of the little I've watched of Herc, don't like what they did with Ares there. too....cheesy villain rather than the complex entity he was on Xena. Plus, he just had great chemistry with Lucy. And Renee, though we didn't get to see as much of that. And boy, it would have been kinda cool to see more of his going after Gabrielle in S5. They needed some Lucy light eps, why not go that route rather than stupid un-funny comedy crap? hates MWF with a passion If they wanted comedy, TQIM is quite good evidence the cast can pull it off without much Xena, without needing to descend into buffoonery. Aphrodite - She's just so much fun! She and Gabrielle ended up having such a cool friendship and it would have been cool to see more of that. And again, it didn't need to descend into buffoonery and just meh stuff, like Little Problems was. Although I do love the moment when AT about loses it and barely gets the line out after their helmet horns catch. That's about the best thing about that ep. Athena - Add me to the camp that would have liked to have seen her around before needing to be the villain. It's funny, but while I don't really like what TPTB did with her (for the Goddess of Wisdom, she's kinda dumb. plus, tad bit unreasonable) really like what Paris did with the role. Artemis - Considering how much the Amazons added to the show (especially for Gabrielle) not one glimpse of her until right before she gets whacked? She doesn't regard mortal lives as particularly valuable (even Ilainus is more like a favorite pet than anything else), and unlike Ares she has no motive to take the risk of letting Eve live. However, I definitely think that it would have been good if she had appeared on the show in the earlier seasons, before being Xena's adversary, and if she and Xena had more of a history (a positive one). It would have made their conflict more poignant.
