YouTube's Video Identification tool

What is YouTube's new Video Identification tool?
The Video Identification tool is the latest way YouTube offers copyright holders to easily identify and manage their content on YouTube. The tool creates ID files which are then run against user uploads and, if a match occurs, the copyright holders policy preferences are then applied to that video. Rights owners can choose to block, track or monetize their content.

What are "ID files?"
The digital content identification file which corresponds to a reference file (a piece of content like a movie, music or other audiovisual material). This file is generated using Google software and is also known as a "fingerprint."

Where does the reference library come from?
The reference library is generated from copies of content or from ID files that are submitted by content owners.

How accurate is Video Identification?
The solution is very accurate in finding uploads that look similar to reference files that are of sufficient length and quality to generate an effective ID File. The system is tuned to offer the best possible automated matches while eliminating most false positive matches. We are constantly tuning the system to deal with attempts to circumvent it, therefore exact rates are not available.

Yeah, i agree it sucks!!!

One would think that, with the tons of money they made of the series they,. would be a little lenient on something like the vids, especially ones made by fans..

I Believe Creation can do this because they're licensed by Universal to put on these official conventions and sell they're (Universals) official merchandise.

Yeah, but the videos are not made by Creation, they are made by video artists and are usually posted on YouTube prior to being shown at conventions.

If Universal believes that fan video making is an act of copyright infringement then they shouldn't be encouraging it.

As long as no one is making money from this and Universal isn't losing money because of it, I think it's ridiculous for them to do this. They really don't get that at this point, when X:WP is off the air, the only way they can still make money off the series is if the fandom continues to be active.

Yeah, or at least Universal is willing to look the other way.

Somewhat in their defense maybe, I do think that they are mainly targeting postings of full episodes with these filters.

Yeah, most of mine that have been hit are the subtitled subtext ones, which have HUGE chunks of one episode in them...not that you can see it half the time under all those subtitles *giggle*

It's strange that it's only in the US too, I mean do they just only care about stopping people in the USA watching copyrighted material?

Nice to know about how the fingerprinting works though, just a shame as sometimes having a clip at the beggining/end of a video works really well.
