"Pleeease baby?! I promise she wont cause any problems. She'll probably sleep through the whole lesson." Tulla crooned into the phone.
"Okay, explain the situation again please." Charlie muttered.
"My sister and her husband are bringing my niece to stay for five days while they go to some work seminar."
"And your parents can't watch her why?"
"Because I 'm on spring break. Plus, I secretly believe that they hope that this will be some enlightening experience, and I will feel the overpowering urge to settle down with a man." Tulla heard the chuckle she loved and knew that she almost had Charlie. "Baby, I swear she'll be good." She also knew that she could get Charlie to cave if she called her "Baby" enough times.
Even though she knew Charlie couldn't see her, she still pouted with all the might she could muster, but she could still practically hear the woman on the other line smiling. "Well, I suppose. . ."


That following Tuesday, Tulla found herself hobbling to Charlie's door, balancing an armful of sheet music, diaper bag and her car seat confined niece. Just as she was about to knock on the door, using her head, the door swung open to reveal a very amused Charlie.
"You know, we have this amazing new technology called a cell phone. . ." Charlie informed her as a sly grin continued to grow on her face.
"Ha ha. Hows about helpin' me out here?"
"Now missy, don't get snippy. It was your idea to still have the lesson now wasn't it?"
"I'm terrified to think of what piece you'd give me if I missed another lesson. Anyway I love to watch how geeky you get over babies." Tulla returned the grin now that the stress on her arms was alleviated.
She followed Charlie into the house, and into the conservatory, which was, were her lessons took place. She gently lowered the car sear to the floor just to the left of the piano bench, desperately hoping that the infant stayed asleep. She let out the breath she was holding when the child's eyes fluttered but did not open.
The start of the lesson went about the same way as it always had before. Starting with warming up using scales, arpeggios and chords. After Tulla was properly warmed up, they started on the pieces Charlie had selected for her.
Tulla had made it successfully through half of Chopin's Nocturnes in E Minor, when she felt like something was about to go wrong.
"Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap!" She chanted, although still avoiding any mistakes that were desperately trying to come out of the woodwork,
"Hey, hun you're doing fine. What's up?" Charlie did not bother to hide any concern she felt for the girl at the piano. This was something she'd never done before, and it worried the blonde some.
"Damn it! I was sure she'd be fine!" Tulla offered no explanation to her poor confused teacher, as she got up from the bench and walked over to the car seat.
Charlie watched in amazement as Tulla lifted the baby out of the car seat just as she started to fuss.
"My god! How did you do that?"
Tulla looked over at Charlie with a sheepish smile. "I dunno, instinct I guess?" Tulla felt her smile widened as the blonde continued to stare at her, completely flabbergasted.
"I am so sorry about this. I was sure she'd be ok." Tulla mumbled apologetically, grabbing for a bottle out of the diaper bag.
Charlie didn't say anything, but continued to watch Tulla, still in total shock.
"Ok how did you know she needed the bottle?" Chrlie asked wide-eyed.
"Babe, it's nothing really. Something you just get used to. She doesn't make a big fuss when she's hungry. You should hear the dirty diaper cry. More like a wailing banshee." Tulla teased, winking at her.
Charlie took a seat on the piano bench, taking in the sight of Tulla coddling the small child. Noticing the slightest things, like the small upturn of the corners of Tulla's mouth as she watched the baby. Or how her thumb would gently stroke the infant's hand every time she reached up for her bottle.
Without thinking, but without hesitation, Charlie heard the words escaping her lips. "I wish we had our own." Hearing those words, Tulla's head snapped up, her eyes boring into Charlie's.
Without upsetting her niece, Tulla beckoned Charlie to come over to her. Without saying anything at first, she just gazed into Charlie's eyes. She could see the worry brewing behind the green eyes, caused by words she was not sure she should have said. Leaning toward Charlie, she felt the sigh of relief. As though they were in a crowded room, Tulla gently whispered, "I love you" before lightly pressing her lips against Charlie's.
Charlie pulled back, and she could see the small ocean of tears that were welling up in Tulla's eyes.
"I think the Chopin is coming along well enough that we can stop for today." She couldn't suppress her smile as she and Tulla walked side by side into the living room.
Once again, she couldn't keep her eyes from following all of Tulla's movements as she carefully handled with the perfect ease of a seasoned veteran, setting the now empty bottle on the coffee table and sitting back against the couch. She knew in her heart that she truly meant the words that she had uttered only moments ago. Just watching Tulla with the baby filled her with a earning to never leave the young woman's side.
"You planning on joining us anytime soon?" Charlie was broken from her reverie as her eyes focused on the bright smiling face of the one she loved.
"You betcha." She settled next to Tulla, laying her head against her shoulder as Tulla wrapped her free hand around Charlie, pulling her close.
Charlie's hand went directly to the baby's back, gently caressing, and watching the baby's eyes struggling to stay open.
"She's so tiny babe." Again staring in amazement, but this time at the precious buddle nestled against Tulla's chest.
"Babies tend to do that hun." Tulla chuckled amused.
Charlie smacked Tulla's thigh for teasing her, but she felt the love of Tulla's voice pour over her, unable to stop the "God I love you" slipping from her lips.
