A fun character, and played by Bruce Campbell with just the right mix of humor and swagger, though not particularly deep -- his more "serious" moments in Tsunami and Vanishing Act didn't really work for me. I also think he got stuck in some subpar episodes. I have to say that as far as Key to the Kingdom goes, I didn't find him particularly memorable in that ep .... I actually liked the Joxer and Meg moments better. I think his first X:WP ep, A Royal Couple of Thieves, remained his best overall, followed by The Quest, King of Assassins, and A Tale of Two Muses (he was absolutely hilarious as Philipon the Reformer).

My favorite Auto moments: his initial encounter with Xena and Gabrielle in ARCOT; his Sinteres impersonation; "Hey, I paid for an hour!" in The Quest; the back-and-forth with Joxer in King of Assassins (Bruce and Ted really played well off each other!) and the banter with Cleo; the conversation in Vanishing Act where he reminds Xena of the favor he did her in The Quest; and the Philippon scenes in Two Muses. He also had some great moments on Hercules, particularly playing himself and his younger self in End of the Beginning.

Btw, I never thought they "killed him off" after the 25-year sleep. We just didn't see him again. I think they should have brought him back for at least one episode in S6. Bruce could have had a blast playing Autolycus as a grumpy old man, unless of course Auto had managed to steal the elixir of youth somewhere. Or turned out to be a never-aging demigod. (In mythology, he was the son of Hermes.)
