I didn't really thinking about Xena robbing Hercules' spotlight until I read this post. I think athenasword might be right. when I was younger I had to
choose which show I wanted to watch since I only got to watch one so late on Saturday nights, so I chose Xena! Due to that choice I missed a lot of Hercules.
Since I've moved from NY to Germany and I can't even get all the seasons. I have season 1 but since 2-6 hasn't made it over here yet I can't
get them. Sad really...

Hi ErisPhobos!
Welcome to XOC. I think you can buy all the seasons of Hercules on eBay.

Wow, he really does seem bitter in that article. It's a bit disappointing.
Perhaps it's his attitude resulting in not getting cameos and/or jobs... |

I have to agree.... Sorbo not only sounds bitter, he sounds downright angry!
Quote: "...Xena was to spin off a series by the end of season two of Hercules would be compatible with it, and what happened was they made her a female Hercules, except a far more violent one! In that show they had two issues that separated it from Hercules: one, it was heavily into lesbianism, as people know, and number two: it was heavily into violence. It was far more violent than Hercules was. She killed 20 people an episode, Hercules killed two people in seven seasons!..." Wow talk about exaggeration... Kevin Sorbo seemed to have quite a grudge against Xena: Warrior Princess. |

^Well, you'd be denial if you didn't agree that Xena was very violent! LOL. I didn't find his comment offensive, I found it pretty funny actually.
When did he say that again? I seem to remember watching that on TV, must of been in one of the HTLJ DVDs.
During its original air, I watched both shows. I loved both, but something about Xena really rocked my socks. |

I guess it depends on how it is read, or seen. And since I just read it, I felt it had a bitter angry sound to it.
And of course Xena was violant, but she certainly did not kill 20 people per episode! |

He was exaggerating numbers but it's an unarguable truth. Herc and Iolaus beat up thugs with their fists. Xena is much likelier to kill a random thug every
ep with her weapons. And she does kill a lot in combat whether it's noted by characters or not.
Do you think all of this started when they debuted Callisto? It was a great episode, but I just didn't see a need for her to be there. They could have filmed a Xena ep where she became immortal if Hades pulled her out of Tartarus instead of Hera. Other than Hope, Callisto is the uniquely Xena element that connected both shows, and she easily became a nemesis of Herc as much as Xena. Ares had already been played by someone else first on Herc. Nonetheless having Callisto on there to explore her past in Cirra somewhat seemed like it was taking advantage of Herc's lighter fantasy adventure theme over Xena's dark fighting theme. Xena hardly involves anything like time travel or other universes, it's not its thing. Herc and Iolaus shouldn't personally give a damn about Callisto; she's Xena's problem, and Herc had nothing to do with Xena becoming evil.

Interesting idea - I think that Callisto's appearance on Surprise marked the beginning of a concerted effort by TPTB to boost H:TLJ's ratings by bringing in crossover material from X:WP. Immediately following Surprise, the KS version of Ares (the other major X:WP adversary) debuted in the Hind Trilogy, and of course Xena and Gab themselves showed up for the arc finale. The Hind Trilogy was also noticeably darker and more brooding than was usual for the series, suggesting that TPTB were searching for ways to inject more X:WP-style angst into Herc's storylines. Now that I look at it, all of this effort suggests to me that TPTB still cared a great deal about their original series, and were striving for ways to reinvigorate the show. I think they knew that Callisto wasn't a perfect fit for H:TLJ but she was a very popular villain, and the time-travel motif in AN allowed them to explore her backstory in a way that they'd never been able to on X:WP. Likewise, the darkly seductive dynamic Ares had with Xena wouldn't work well with Herc (brotherly subtext being pretty icky), so instead TPTB made Ares broader and gave him a Tommy Smothers-like vibe - "Dad always liked you best!"

CasualFan wrote: Very good point, CF! Hadn't thought about it that way but it seems true. As a Xena fan first and foremost, I sometimes wish all of Callisto's storyline had been kept on X:WP -- I was very frustrated for a while because I had no idea (before getting Season 3 of H:TLJ and seeing Surprise) how Callisto got out of Tartarus, became immortal, and got trapped in that cave in ANE. However, I think those episodes (Surprise and AN I & II) definitely benefited H:TLJ and helped make the show more "adult." I don't know if they had to make Ares quite so "broad" on H:TLJ -- the sibling rivalry theme could have been played much more subtly and dramatically, the way it was in God Fearing Child. Even Hind Arc Ares was far more dramatic, and genuinely menacing, than the buffoonish baddie he became later on.
