Some intimacy during her warlording days but never consummated. It's the best scenario to fit most of the canon (barring the original "I used to wonder what you looked like" because it was early in the first season and their backstory hadn't been cemented yet) and it makes sense that Xena would keep Ares on the edge, so he'd want her more. Whatever her reasons for doing that, I don't know, but I get the feeling that despite his later frustration, Ares enjoyed their 'push and pull' as much as Xena seemed to (um, and me too). The exultant way he 'gloried' in yelling her name during that Herc alternate universe episode - AN? - I wondered who was the god and who was the worshipper?

Anyway, their chemistry during the show's run always screamed UST to me. And there was never any mention by either of them that whatever intimacy they engaged in was ever consummated. In AUS, Ares even referenced the 'will she, won't she' game she'd been playing all those years, with no......payoff.

Although I will say, as we've discussed before, that something seemed to have changed between YAT and POV because there was a 'new' kind of intimacy between them. Not caused by the Red Glow, that is. I'm just not sure I want to believe that X/A would have sex and the powers that be wouldn't let us have even a peek at it. That's just too mean.

But why would he only reference things from the point of when she turned good and not the whole of their association when he was yelling about her cat and mouse game, especially since he'd just said he's desired her since he *first* saw her in battle? I know, per Gabrielle's very valid suggestion, that Ares was obsessed with Xena as she was during the show's run, with the 'new' Xena, but I don't see that as being a reason he'd ignore all of their past together, including her warlording days.

We agree on that line in Coming Home, though. I think Ares realized that as a mortal there were things he could share with Xena that he couldn't as a god, like trust. Love and desire was easy, but trust....that was harder, especially before s6.
