What I am wondering is, is bitext in its nature something that evolves around Xena, or could she have a supporting role?

Just random question, but is the definition of bitext a specific love triangle with Xena in its centre? Or is it just a love triangle including Xena?

Well, this poll specifically is about X/G, X/A bitext, but it would be interesting to start a poll about what other "bitexts" people
support. (I'm defining "bitext" as supporting two different pairings for the same character.)

Okay, so the bitext is just another definition of a love triangle then? It's not the specific name for the G/X/A one? Like how a subber is a X/G person or
how other fandoms have specific names for specific pairings like Bangel (Buffy/Angel) or Tibette (Tina/Bette).

Well to be honest I haven't heard it in other fandoms...and the word 'text' in relationship descriptions like 'bitext' and
'subtext' or even 'shippertext' I haven't heard elsewhere...so it may just be this one that uses it.
Anywho in response to the poll....guess what haha...I voted number 1. Love seeing the chemistry between Xena and Ares but for me it's all about Xena and Gabrielle being in a relationship even if the sexual tension and the possibility is there with Ares. If Gabrielle wasn't there...who knows. I don't identify as a bitexter...but for me the interest in how they all interact are part of what makes the pairing I do like so fascinating. Besides...I adore Ares lol. NO GABRIELLE, NO XENA! PLA | Keeper of Gabrielle's Quill

The only pairings I have come across is Torchwood and they use names mixed up and have Ianto and Jack = Janto and Jack and Gwen= Gwack!
If any series suffers from multi-text it's Torchwood! So would it be Gena or Xabrielle? For you shippers; Xares or Arena And for Bitexters: Xabres or if Xena does have to be in the middle of thing Arenaelle! (Think I'll stick to calling it bitext) Tony: I quite like women in a sad, baffled sort of way! But can we get a grip? Out of a workforce of five, at any given moment one will have pre menstrual tension, one's panicking because she's not, someone's having a hot flush and someone else is having a nervous breakdown because her HRT patch has fallen in the minestrone! Jean: That was a one off! (Dinnerladies)

I think the "bitexter" label is something I've only seen in the fandom in the past 3-4 years, in reference to X/G, X/A (or X/G/A) fans. No idea
if it's used in any other fandoms.

I voted for other. My feelings on this are very fluid and depend entirely on the situation.
Regarding the series, I am very happy with how both X/A and X/G were portrayed. I don't really have any unfulfilled wishes regarding either one. Had TPTB chosen to give us definitive, undeniable proof of X/A or X/G, I would have been perfectly fine with either one. The love/hate, sexual chemistry between Ares and Xena was to me, as Chris Manheim said, undeniable and quite enjoyable to watch. I thought the X/A scene in Eternal Bonds was incredibly hot and I was completely fooled when it was revealed to be a dream. The back and forth between the two with Xena always besting Ares was fantastic. Although I find Xena and mortal Ares to be much more appealing in a romantic relationship though than Xena with GOW Ares. There are times in season 6 where I think, yup, X/G are in a full bore sexual relationship and other times where I think, hmmm, I guess not. That's the nature of subtext. I will say that in order for me to support X/G as lovers, it has to be post-Antony and Cleopatra, otherwise Xena's behavior towards her soulmate/lover in that episode is quite abysmal and borderline cruel I think. Its fine if they each had feelings they hadn't acted upon yet though. Ultimately the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle and their devotion to each other is the strongest pull for me in the series whether they were ever lovers or not. In fanfic, it totally depends on the story. I can thoroughly enjoy most of the scenarios listed above as long as the story is well-written and true to the characters. My one steadfast rule regarding X/A is that Xena cannot abandon Gabrielle to go off and have a life with Ares. I have a very vague memory of a fanfic where Xena and Ares finally got together on Olympus or some paradise Ares created and unless my memory is failing me, the story ended with Xena deciding to abandon her life completely including Gabrielle to stay there in paradise with Ares. I don't think she even went back to say bye. Totally unacceptable to me! Ares has to fit into Xena and Gabrielle's life together!! LadyKate's fabulous fanfic Equal to the Gods introduced me to the concept of bitext. Much to my surprise, I found that a very appealing notion but with some caveats. As portrayed in most of ETTG, Xena was having separate relationships with Gabs and Ares with both of them suffering quite a bit of pain, anger, jealousy and basically being forced to live side by side as enemies in order to be with Xena and Xena plagued with guilt over the situation. Additionally, Xena holds all the power with regards to who she will spend her time with and they each have to adjust to Xena's desires. In the longterm, that's not a dynamic that I think is sustainable nor one that I would like to see permanently (which is why I loved LK's ending and am eagerly awaiting the sequel!) I just feel too badly for Gabs and Ares and resent Xena having all the power like that. Bitext scenarios that appeal to me must have Ares and Gabrielle eventually developing a relationship of their own preferably as both friends and lovers who have more of an equal footing in the relationship without Xena calling all the shots. Basically the three need to have a shared life together with all the joy, pain and struggles that go with that, not parallel relationships with Xena and no relationship with each other. Most definitely G/X/A!!!

Okay, this one is difficult it made think.
I see the two "texts" as parallel realities, in one of which Xena and Gabrielle are lovers, and in the other they are platonic soulmates and Xena is in love with Ares. I personally believe in love Ares/Xena. But I sense that the series tried to show a spiritual love Xena/Gab. Anyhow, Xena rocks!!!!

I don't really consider myself a bitexter. There moments on the show where I like the idea of the Xena/Gabrielle relationship as a romantic one--the end of When In Rome, the end of A Family Affair, the reunion scene in A Family Affair, the "thirty seconds to live" scene in AFIN II, and there are other moments throughout as well. I have grown interested in them as a pairing more so now than I have been previously. But my heart still truly lies with Xena and Ares. That's the one that really does it for me, for lots of reasons, and it will always by my #1 interest in terms of ships. The idea of a trio doesn't work that much for me mainly because it would be hard for them to maintain such a life (though it is interesting to explore briefly), and it's hard to view some of the series in this kind of way mainly for the reason that I would feel like Xena is cheating on Gabrielle for going after romantic interests such as Ares, Antony and the like. So, to see Xena and Gabrielle as a romantic couple sometimes, I keep that separate from my shipper side. That way, it doesn't come into conflict with my deep interest in XA. If that makes sense.

I like the idea of an open relationship with both. But I also love ETTG by LadyKate. Anyway I can get X/G and X/A, I'm happy!
