I kinda think so, like it was a conscious effort to bring back the feel of the early episodes. Only, it was a little too deliberate, if that makes sense. There was an ease to ADITL that was missing in MHR. I found the same thing with that desert episode I can't recall the name of - Legacy? - where Gabrielle accidently kills that boy that crushed on her. The bath scene, the fact that Gabrielle was using a staff instead of a sais (though that made sense since she was badly shaken by accidentally killing someone), and the little moment when the boy was rubbing Gab's feet and Xena's look when she noticed - it all hailed back to some classic moments in the earlier episodes but seemed, to me, to be too forced.

But I loved the Sappho poem scene, and the way they flew off together. That was a genuinely moving moment for me, especially considering what happened later on.
