Many Happy Returns = A Day In The Life pt.2? |
Lead | |
|
The pranks similar to the whole parody of
their relationship, Xena putting an eel in Gabrielle's bed just like she threw an eel at Gabrielle while fishing, Xena purposely falling for
Gabrielle's fish-guts prank like she allowed Gabrielle to whack her with her staff before they slept, Ferragus similar to Zagreas?, etc. Is it just me or were the writers trying to recapture the magic of the best
comedy episode "A Day In The Life" in "Many Happy Returns" before the series ended?

I kinda think so, like it was a conscious effort to bring back the feel of the early episodes. Only, it was a little too deliberate, if that makes sense. There
was an ease to ADITL that was missing in MHR. I found the same thing with that desert episode I can't recall the name of - Legacy? - where Gabrielle
accidently kills that boy that crushed on her. The bath scene, the fact that Gabrielle was using a staff instead of a sais (though that made sense since she
was badly shaken by accidentally killing someone), and the little moment when the boy was rubbing Gab's feet and Xena's look when she noticed - it all
hailed back to some classic moments in the earlier episodes but seemed, to me, to be too forced.
But I loved the Sappho poem scene, and the way they flew off together. That was a genuinely moving moment for me, especially considering what happened later on. |

Let's not forget Gabrielle growing her hair back in "Return of the Valkyrie", and season 6 as a whole having random adventures like the classic
seasons 1-2, and not having a dramatic seasonal plot like seasons 3-5.
I also agree with you about the Sappho poem scene, and them flying off into the sunset .

I actually always felt that Old Ares Had a Farm was more like a nod to ADITL in terms of humor and whatnot. Many Happy Returns was just that last feel-good
episode before drama kicks in to high gear.

I never thought about MHR like that, although I see your point. It did have a lot of the same kind of humour that was in ADITL but that may be a reason I love
it so much. The banter and the pranks between Xena and Gabrielle always keep me going back. It was the last feel good episode of the season, and if it was a
way to try and reconnect with the first seasons, like perhaps other episodes in S6 I love it even more.
But the poem scene...awwww...is just too adorable for words.

It's no wonder that OAHAF had more of a feel to ADITl... the same guy wrote it---R.J. As for MHR, it was a backburner script that was shot through the
process to cover for the musical episode. It lacked some TLC maybe. But given that Liz wrote it, it probably didn't need much done to it.

They probably are quite similar. But I think MHR is way better than ADITL. It's just so funny, and then it's got my favourite scene ever....the poem!

Yeah they are quite similar aren't they?, a lot of the same comedic jokes. I think what makes it different for me at least is with MHR when I watch it I
don't see Gabrielle and Xena like with ADITL I see Lucy and Renee. I think that's kinda what makes it unique.
