Now the new installment is here, and it's a big one. The character is randomly chosen by picking cards out of a box. And guess what I pulled... Yep, it's the Psycho Barbie herself! That's partly why it took me a while to start the thread -- we were having lots of other discussions, some of them touching on Callisto. The ratings are on a scale of 1 (worst/most disliked) to 10 (best/most liked). You don't have to "like" the character as a person to give them a high rating -- it can be a character who is a bad person but interesting, well-written, well-acted, etc. So, on that 1-10 scale, how would you rate Callisto as a character? Why do you like or dislike her? What do you most like/dislike about her? What are your favorite and least favorite Callisto lines or scenes? Go for it! How do you rate Callisto on a 1-10 scale? The complexity of the character, the way Hudson played it. All of it was perfect. I do grumble a little about her re-appearance in Seeds of Faith, but that still can't tarnish the glory of this character. Perfection.

How could I not give her a 10? The best villain ever. A complex and incredible character. Played by Hudson. What more could we ask? PLA FOREVER!!! Without Gabrielle there would be no Xena Thanks to SaraXenite for the banner, to Shenanigen for the scroll and to Aurora Goddess for the keeper sig!

She is a BRILLIANT villain. Like, actually brilliant. The complexity of her character, the acting of Hudson, the way that, even when used as a plot device, she was still way too interesting to be simply a 'sideshow'. She's funny as hell, so you love to hate her. She is a thorn in Xena's side, which makes her a thorn in your side. She is in most of the more memorable episodes aswell. She presents a challenge for Xena everytime she gets involved, and that is something you have to relish, really. Favourite lines? Hmmmmm. 'Not quite up to snuff at the moment' I love her little growl of 'Damn!' in Ides of March "Alright, we both know how much I love chit-chat." "Now, shall I carve, or will you?" "What is this, some kind of martyrdom phase you're going through?" "Ah, the mother and child reunion. I'm all misty-eyed." "Yes, Gabrielle, it seems your daughter is in heat." Oh my, she has soooooooo many great lines. "I hate that.."

I love her determination and stubbornness. She's psychotic but we can't help but feel bad for her and like her. Hudson plays her so very well. Callisto was deliciously evil, yet complex and sympathetic, and so damn FUN. Part of me wishes she'd stayed the Psycho Barbie we all know and love instead of becoming an angel, but I still can't give her any less than a 10. Some of my favorite Callisto lines: "Don't move, pretty. That sentimental side of you is a real problem now, isn't it? You fight with your heart. That gives me an advantage over you - I no longer seem to have one. I'm not gonna kill you now - oh, no. First I'm gonna kill your soul, just like you killed mine. See you soon, my sweet." "Love is a trick that nature plays to get us to reproduce. I want no part of it." "How've you been? Any new husbands since the last one I killed?" "What did I feel when Xena confessed her crimes? See, that's the problem, Gabrielle - I never feel anything. I mean, bits and pieces here and there, but nothing solid. Think back to when you were a little girl, and all you knew was your mother and your sister, and all your faith revolved around them. Now, kill them. My turn." ("What?") "When I sliced open your husband, how long did it take him to die?" ("Hurt my son, and I swear by any god you name, I'll -") "You'll do what? You'll make my life a living hell? Old hat, dear. You did that years ago, when you barbecued my family. Now it's my turn to host the cook-out." "So, how about it? I scratch your back, you stab mine." Love her. Just LOVE her. You know what line I love.. and would've made me so so happy if Xena responded "best....idea....ever" when Callisto tells Xena they should both take the ambrosia and battle it out for eternity. I love how complex Callisto is, her hate/love for Xena is very facisnating. I also love that Callisto does whatever she wants. I don't even necessarily mean this in a way that she just gets to be evil, because I think if she was a good guy she'd still just do whatever she wanted, and that self confidence is kind of admireable What's interestng to me is that it's more so in soaps where you get these "love to hate" characters, but in reality I love to love Callisto, but to me it's really impressive to love a bad guy in a action series. This is just because this character is threatening the livihood of the main characters, and it's hard to love someone who's killing the cornerstone of the series. In this way Ares doesn't compare to Callisto because in reality he never really wanted to kill Xena ever. I like that Callisto got redeemed. Of course maybe I would've liked it to be her own choice (I always thought a "good" Callisto ala The Sacrifice would've been interesting to explore, essentially her half heartedly helping Xena in a matter that makes things harder than more effective... but at least she was redeemed instead of just dead and gone forever. She is the ultimate antithesis of a cardboard cutout villain. What a wonderful concept to have an evil character who has a completely legitimate beef with the show's hero. As Calliso said, Xena did make her therefore she bears a huge responsibility for Callisto's reign of terror. None of the other antagonists that followed ever came close to the complexity of Calliso. Cardboard villain, thy name is Alti. Hudson Leick was hypnotic to watch on screen and although I'm very Xena-centric, Callisto is one of the few characters where my attention is more riveted on her than on Xena in their scenes together. There was a great balance between feeling sympathetic towards her in moments where we saw that she just wanted her pain to end and being repulsed by her and wishing Xena would take her out permanently during a hideous act like the murder of Perdicas. Angel Callisto was okay but rather bland and uninteresting to me but I don't hold that against her overall so the 10 still holds. Oh and I totally agree with ChakramGoddess' list of quotes! Angel Callisto brings her down, but at least that was only two episodes. I'll say it again---10! Callisto was a HUGE reason why I loved this show. As much as I love X & G, I think it's very important to have standout secondary characters like Callisto and Ares. I love all of these Callisto quotes, but honestly, just reading them doesn't do the lines justice. The real punch was in Hudson's delivery. She could take little lines and really add punch,e.g. "Nighty Night.", "Gimme my ambrosia!" One of my favorite deliveries ever was when she said "Flesh of your flesh, bone of your bone. I can't wait to see all that." Excellent! I certainly felt that S 6 was lacking Callisto, and I wish they could have brought her back for one last bang. It would have been easy enough to replace Alti with Callisto in WFC. My one quibble was that she left the show with a whimper rather than a big bang. I never liked that she was reborn as Eve. I also would have liked to see more of her in season 4. More Callisto! More! Gimme more ~~~~~~~~~ I'm the King of Sweetness, my dear. --Hades to Persephone "Not Fade Away."

After all, in her debut episode Theodorus said that Callisto wanted to kill Xena in combat.
