May I thoroughly recommend this TV drama. I am sure it will be available on BBC World/America (or another channel) at some time. The characters were real,
the pace was gentle, it was humerous and Africa looked fabulous. CSI it ain't but it was wonderful- a real Sunday night TV show (We tend to have gentle
drama series on tv in Britain on Sundays). I haven't read the book yet will now try and get hold of it and am looking forward to the series when it
starts.

Hey hold on... the title of the show sounds familiar and you said it was a book. A book series perhaps? When I was an intern at a newspaper I had to do a story
about a monthly book club and they were covering the book Tears of a Giraffe. It took place in Botswana I think, a place in Africa. I actually had to read the
book and attend the club meeting in order to write about it. It was good. Am I thinking about the same thing do you think? It's been nearly two years since
I read that book.
Anyway, If I see something by that name on BBC America I'll be sure to check it out. Speaking of British drama, and 'CSI it ain't'. I get a Canadian channel where I am at now and I think it was on that, that I caught something called Waking the Dead (I think, or something similar to that title). It was set up like some kind of CSI/Law and Order type show where they had to solve an old crime and follow the clues that lead them to the perp. After sticking with the show to the end, I was extremely upset to learn that the killer was not found. What the heck! In CSI, L&O, and any one of our American shows like this the criminal is brought to justice within the hour format. Maybe we Americans just have short attention spans I don't know. But I think I tried to catch the show the following week and either they did not show the episodes in sequence or they had moved on to another case because I never found out what the heck happened! Do most TV shows in the UK resolve the storyline (or a
storyline) during that episode, or do they make you wait? I'd really like to know, so I can be prepared next time. Most of the British Television that
I've watched has been comedies like Keeping Up Appearances, Are you being Served, Father Ted, The vicar of dibley, etc. where the storyline seems to be
mostly resolved in the same episode it is introduced. I haven't had as much experiance with British dramas.

Hi Katyrina,
Yes The No1 Ladies Dective Agency is part of a series of books. I checked it out on Amazon and there are plenty of books-looks like I know what I'll be reading during summer! As for the "Waking the Dead" I don't actually watch it, although I know the show you mean. Generally Britcish TV does have a resolution-if it was an older series I might question it, but now everything has a resolution. IIRC "Waking the Dead" is usually shown over 2 parts in the UK, does that help at all? Glad that British comedies are well received elsewhere. We do have an odd sense of humour and some of the comedies reflect that!

Thank you for the information. Waking the Dead being shown over 2 parts makes sense. I was just so upset because I was not expecting that, lol. But now if I
try to watch it again, I'll know better. And yes, I love British comedies. Got any more recommendations that I didn't list above?

Comedies now you are talking!!
My favourite all time is "The Good Life". A surban couple leave the rat race and become self sufficient. Filmed in the 70s it had a perfect cast and was brilliant. The Blackadders are good. Particularly Blackadder II set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. "Only Fools and Horses". Two brothers trying to make a million! You may have trouble with understanding some of the cockney rhyming slang though!! "Hi de Hi" set in a holiday camp in the 50s. The first few series are fantastic, very funny, but loses it over time. A real ensemble piece. "'Allo 'Allo" (Allegedly this is what the Hercules cast based their accents on when they did the episode set during the French revolution!) It is set in France during Second World War and is a rip off of "secret army". It has to be seen to be believed as everyone speaks English but with accents and you genuinely believe they don't understand each other! "Drop the Dead Donkey" may lose a lot in translation set in a newsroom and very topical for the week (in the 90s) early ones were the best. "Dad's Army" set during second world war. A classic. 'nuff said. "Dinnerladies" I'm a huge Victoria Wood fan and this is brilliant. Set in a canteen it follows a group of workmates though their lives and loves. Best comedy in the last few years. That's it for now, but I'll have a think, and get back to you if I think of any more! I know there are clips of many of them on You Tube if you want to get a flavour of them.

How could I have forgotten these?!!
"Fawlty Towers" Cringe worthy at times, but sensational. If you only watch one episode make sure it's "Basil the Rat". One of the greatest 30 minute shows ever. "Absolutely Fabulous" Totally un-pc and hilarious. "One Foot in the Grave" In Britain the name "Victor Meldrew" now means a grumpy old man. But they made it so good because his wife was a strong character. "Jam and Jeruselum" (Might be renamed Clatterford in America) not bad but it does have great heart and some great actresses in it. "Birds of a Feather" three female leads and the early series were quite good.

I love The Thin Blue Line and
My Family Btw, 'Allo 'Allo has been popular all over Europe. I saw the whole series in French first and caught up on the original version later. I think the latest country to show it is Russia. Another series, about MI 5 (?) is Spooks. That is sometimes in two parts. It's very good. Ashes To Ashes is on right now, but it's a continuous story, and might be a bit incomprehensible to an American public. I forgot to mention The Ladies' No 1 Detective Agency. I've seen the first ep too, and love it. Some of the actors I know from UK shows like Spooks, and they are so very different playing Africans from Botswana.

I've seen Fawlty Towers, but not the episode Basil the Rat. Thanks for the tip. 'One Foot in the Grave' I have heard of, but never had the opportunity to see. Ashes To Ashes is on right now, but it's a continuous story, and might be a bit incomprehensible to an American public. How's that? I forgot to mention The Ladies' No 1 Detective Agency. I've seen the first ep too, and love it. Great, I hope someone decides to let those of us in the states see it too. But if not, it reminds me that I should read more of the books.

Drop the Dead Donkey sounds worse than it is! It's news room talk about dropping a story (about a deceased donkey!).
'Allo 'Allo has just been sold to Germany. I'm not sure how it will go down there, although the Germans are all portrayed a bit bumbling but friendly towards the French. Ashes to Ashes good. It follows on Life on Mars which you really need to have seen first to make any sense of. You could enjoy the episodes on one level if you haven't seen Life on Mars but I recommend you see it first. If you are Dctor Who fans may I recommend Torchwood. I have hugely enjoyed the second series and thought it was much better to the first. well worth a look (WARNING It can be adult at times and IS NOT a family show like Doctor Who)

Gabfan23 wrote: You're right; Germany is the latest to acquire it; since 2000 it has already been shown in Russia. I didn't know that Ashes To Ashes followed Life On Mars so I'll
have to look out for that.
Katyrina, I wrote' incomprehensible' because of the spoken English which I find a bit difficult to follow myself.
