I have to admit. I'm really bummed out by this choice. Sure I loved Pan's Labrynth, but I was really rooting for Sam Raimi to get this movie.

Battle On,
I'm through accepting limits, 'cause someone says there's so. Some things I cannot change, but 'till I try, I'll never know. |

My reaction . . . hmmmmm . . . interesting. We'll see how it turns out.
Of course in an ideal world the movie of The Hobbit wpuld have been made by Peter Jackson while he was filming the LotR and released as a prequel to the LotR. -ah well- |

I agree. All I know is I already told my husband to book his parents as babysitters as soon as we find out what opening night is...in case we have a baby by
then.

And here for a second I thought you meant Benecio Del Toro - I was bugging my eyes out - thinking, yea sure - accomplished bored actors fancy themselves directors an awful lot, ("That Oscar win was fine n' all, but what I really wanna do is direct.") but that is one HUGE film to attempt as one's first directing gig, after being known as a quirky dark character actor for ages. And it's Genre to boot, which isn't in his wheel house!

I'm glad Del Toro's going to work on this project. I've enjoyed some of Sam Raimi's films (The Gift, Evil Dead II) but most
of them didn't really excite or intrigue me.

Interesting choice - I liked Pan's Labyrinth as well, and Del Toro may bring a certain darkness to his version of
The Hobbit. I'm sure he'll be working very closely with Peter Jackson and his team to ensure that the
atmosphere of this prequel will meld with LOTR. Looks like Del Toro is going to be a very busy man - his IMDB entry indicates that he's also on tap to
direct At the Mountains of Madness (an adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story) and Dr. Strange (yet another Marvel Comics movie).
I'm rather glad Sam R. didn't end up with the project - I like his work very much (ED, Darkman, The Quick and the Dead, and the first 2 Spiderman movies), but he's a "known quantity" in Hollywood now, and I think it's important that the lesser-known talents continue to be given a chance at the big-ticket movies. I thought it was great when Alfonso Cuaron was picked to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban, and he delivered IMO the most interesting entry in that movie series to date.

my choice would have been gilliam, because he makes more light-hearted quarky movies. i think of the hobbit as being more light-hearted than the rings trilogy.
having said that, i think del toro will do a good job.

Somehow I'm guessing that Sam will never want to work for anyone again - by alternating free-lance directing gigs with being the boss of a
lucrative tv and genre movie-producing company, he quickly got to the A-List of directors... and while he had said he'd have been honored to take over for
Jackson on "The Hobbit," my guess is that he would never have agreed to report to Jackson (who's still producing this, just like Lucas produced
but didn't direct Episodes 5 + 6 of Star Wars.)

Cool!
CasualFan wrote: I agree with that -- out of all of the films, Prisoner of Azkaban has a unique atmosphere that I love. It's a shame he couldn't do more. ETA and OT: I just did a brief Google search and saw that there's a petition for Alfonso Cuaron to direct Deathly Hallows.

Wow, really? Yeah. It was the worst in terms of changing/omitting parts of the book IMO. We can't be Nutty and CG anymore.
