Seriously, do they lace these things with henbane? Try as I might, I can't unstick myself from this universe. I'm living in deathly horror of hitting the end of the lists in the Conqeuror archives (not that I don't still have a long way to go, but still...join me in my paranoia, won't you?).
I know we had this lovely Conqueror Fic Rec Thread a few months back, but I thought it was time for another one (see above about addiction).
Here's what I've read so far and why I love each one:
"Destiny Conquered" by Texbard - My first, and still my favorite. Brilliantly rendered characters and atmosphere. I can't say enough good about this fic.
"Conquered" by Leslie Ann Miller - Sappy at times, but well worth it. Wonderful character study and some VERY creepy Xena the Monster moments. Adored it.
"I, Conqueror" by SwordnQuil - Strong adventure, and very believable Xena. This is the one that's a flip of the Armeggedon Now scenario, where it's Gabrielle sent into the AU to fix things.
"Shadow of the Soul" by Melissa Good - Hands down, the most skillfully crafted and artfully rendered full out novel length conqueror fic I've encountered. A page turner from start to finish, a place and time you will never forget, a perfect mix of horror and humour, and characters you feel you've been right in the room with. I'm aware of the sequel "Queen of Hearts" and I'm sure I'll love it, but I started reading right after Shadow of the Soul, and it was sort of like trying to watch all the Alien movies in one day -- I just spent 250,000 words trying to get them all out alive and settled and safe, and then she's going to blow it all to Hades in a Handbasket again, and I need to let part 1 settle before I take off on the ride again. LOL
I just recently started LJ Maas's series, based on a plethora of stellar recs. I got a little ways in, and it's not bad, but I'm having trouble buying into the character development. The timeline seems way too rushed. It's all the usual progressions and discoveries (artfully told, granted), but it's crushing into the first 24 hours things I would barely accept coming about in a couple of weeks (several days maybe if they were in an immediate life or death or war situation). I've switched to another fic for the time being, though I'm sure I'll come back. So, one of you who adores this series, please reassure me it's worth going forward, because I really want to love it.
And I have just started "My Lord" by Mayt -- So far, so charmed.
So...more recs?????
Any and all suggestions will be appreciated and devoured.
