The recent discussions got me thinking about whether Xena and Gab ended up truly hating Callisto for who she was in the same way that Callisto hated Xena, long after she was gone.
I wonder because of the complex relationship the two shared. Cal began more as an object of pity to Xena, a symbol of her guilt returned to haunt her. It became more personal when the death of Perdicas risked Gabrielle losing her innocence, and Xena let her die.
Beyond that there wasn't much anger at Callisto, seeing her more as an obstacle in the grand scheme, until she killed Solan. She still refused to kill Callisto, however, until Sacrifice. When Xena killed her with the bloody dagger, we saw Gabrielle flash through her mind. Eye for eye, perhaps.
But the pity for Callisto ultimately came to a head when Xena decided to save Callisto's soul in Eternity. What's most puzzling is that after that moment of unadulterated sacrifice and generosity, she still seemed to despise her. Before she discovered the truth about Eve, Xena stated that the old Callisto was alive in her memory. But she'd made the supreme spiritual sacrifice (at the possible risk of losing eternity with Gab no less) to see Callisto turned good and redeemed.
When they discover Livia, Xena says that changing her mind won't be easy, because she has her own darkness in her as well as Callisto's spirit. One wonders whether Xena's bitterness at Callisto ever really ended, since she cites her influence in helping sway Eve's decisions as Livia. Long after it appeared that Xena had graciously forgiven Callisto, she still blamed her.
It's an irony that Xena's last mission is to save the souls of a village she burned in negligence, echoing Cirra. Maybe Morimoto, the samurai who finally killed her, was a similar victim as Callisto, but out to restore his family's honour rather than blind vengeance?
Similarly, Gabrielle claimed that she had forgiven Callisto for murdering Perdicas, but brought him up again angrily in Fallen Angel. It seems that their anger at her lasted longer than both claimed.
