There was that wonderful moment from one of the tv movies that was in the opening credits every week, where Herc actually did use a club to take down a giant much larger than he.

They didn't do a huge variety of "normal" fights against bad guys, but that was balanced by all the diverse fights against giant beasties like Echidna, the she-creature, the sea serpent that menaced Alcmene's wedding, assorted minotaurs, the big snake that Herc and Auto fought, the big snake guarding the chamber where the Olympians were being held in the alt-universe, etc. etc. So while Xena might have done more inventive hand-to-hand combat moves, she never tied a giant snake into knots.

Plus for all-time inventiveness, you gotta give the prize to Iolaus, who always used whatever weapoin was at hand, including one meorable marketplace bawl where he grabbed what turned out to be a long chain of linked sausages... and proceeded to twirl them around like nunchuks, slapping down his foes on every side.

Hercules was big and just threw people around. I'm not sure what else they could have done to make it better considering his size. Throwing people around, spinning them over his head, knocking them against each other--was about the best you could do with someone Hercules' size and with his strength.

Yep, plus that is the character of Hercules - a big guy with a club and a lion skin. I thought they did exactly what they could/should to update the character form the '90's - instead of casting a muscleman (Steve Reeves, Gordon Scott, Lou Ferrigno, or any number of other Herc portrayers over the decades) they cast an athlete (i.e. w/ a football player physique, not tyat of a weightlifter) and had him use martial arts moves a la Jackie Chan along with his feats of strength.

Of course, those oft-repeated moves helped Herc save the world - remember that he and Iolaus were able to use a familar move from their history together to defeat Dahak once and for all.
