A spinoff from the "whose fault" thread where these topics came up.... this is kind of a dual question. In TEN LITTLE WARLORDS, Ares (as a mortal) says, "I never lied to you, Xena. Oh--deceived, manipulated, yeah, but-- a god need never lie."(To which Xena replies, regarding Ares' promises that he will change, "But that's just it, Ares - you're not a god anymore.")Question 1: Does this mean that Ares would be more likely to lie as a mortal than as a god?
There is another way to look at it. Ares was the god that had the most to do with humans. It was his job to bring along up and coming warriors, get wars going and keep Greece strong. To manipulate the human armies he had to be someone the leaders could trust otherwise they would not have done what he wanted. I would think that he would manipulate and everything else, but if it got around Ares' word was bad, then he'd have had a lot more trouble getting his way.

Another thing - what if...

When I think of the good liers I've known (and I've known some doozies!), it strikes me that most lies originate from a position of weakness - the lier wants you to believe that he/she is wiser, stronger, or possesses more valuable assets or information than they have. In that respect, there's no real reason for an Olympian to lie outright to a mortal - the god already has infinitely greater power than the mortal, so there is no real rationale for the superior being to defraud the inferior...

I think it is really simple. Most mortals aren't going to question a god, so why should I god have to lie to them to get that mortal to do what they want done? Most mortals would just do it regards because Hey, it is a higher being telling them to do it.

As for Ares, if any gods should lie, he should be the one. And he says he doesn't lie, that is probably a lie. Gods don't need to lie most of the time, but I'm sure times when they need to lie and will lie to protect themselves from...
