Actually, that's the thing, I'm usually a tea drinker. Without sugar.

Apparently, any liquid spillage can cause serious harm to a computer, but sugarless tea (or water) is probably the least harmful. Sugar is especially bad because the crystals tend to mess with the circuits, but there are crystals in coffee too.

Sooo, I heard from the shop today.

Apparently my coffeed laptop is beyond repair. The guy said that at first he thought he could just replace the keyboard, but seems there's damage to the motherboard as well.

The only thing he can do is get my files off the hard drive -- I'll pick it up tomorrow.

That turned out to be one expensive cup of coffee.

Anyway, I'm sure everything will be fine... the only thing that's bugging me right now is that I just realized I have some material on that laptop I'll need for work this week. Thinking of calling the shop to see how things are going.

And that's the way to do it. Same thing happened to me a few months ago. It didn't affect my laptop, but I took it as a sign from Heaven and still bought a new one.

No laptop is coffee-proof. But I did order a plastic keyboard cover -- it's supposed to be so thin it doesn't interfere with typing at all. We'll see if it lives up to its billing...

Well guess what. I went to take a nap... and after I woke up, my old laptop didn't. It still turned on but the screen was almost completely dark. I suspect it didn't survive the strain of being put back to work after a 2-year hiatus.

Sooo ... I went to the shop, took in my laptop ... then stopped at Best Buy and bought a new Toshiba.

Luckily I drink coffee with no sugar.

I'm home and on my old laptop ... at least that's working fine. *fingers crossed* Tried turning on the one I coffeed (to coin a word ), same results. Going to the shop later today.

That hurts to hear....I had to have my laptop "re-indexed" and lost everything......so I can appreciate the torture of having it and it not working.

Actually I was told it's because when coffee dries it can form crystals that form new bridges between circuits in keyboards and short/confuse the signals. If you spill water on your keyboard, you just let it dry and it's fine, but if you spill coffee on it, especially if it's coffee with sugar, it can really mess things up. Same goes for any sugary drinks I guess.

I'm not popping any keys off!!! I'd rather pay someone who knows what they're doing. Someone suggested I try blowing cold air from the hairdryer on the keyboard, I'll try to do that when I get home. Btw, I have spilled stuff (tea) on it before, and nothing happened. I think it's the cream that made the difference because it's sticky.

I know how that feels, LK. I spilled coke on my laptop TWO TIMES, once the laptop crashed completely and just as I got it back in perfect state, it happened again so uh. You're lucky it's still working at least.

Last night while using my laptop here at the hotel, I knocked over an (almost empty) coffee cup and a bit of coffee spilled on my keyboard. I quickly wiped it off, but guess what... about 15 minutes later some of my keys stopped working. I figured it might be ok in the morning, but instead the keyboard stopped working completely.
