I say things like this all the time to people who I think might be gay (but I'm not precisely sure). And then they'll answer in one of several ways -

1.) completely oblivious to the code and I'll conclude they are not gay.

I think she wanted to escape from that dull stupid village where she couldn't be herself... Not realizing her 'escape' it steamed from her sexuality!
Sometimes gay ppl feel like they are different from what 'society' establishes and it was clearly enough her parents really disapprove of her being like that. You can see that in Family Affair after what Gabrielle's father said to xena when they have a talk alone. I figure coming form a small village, she had no idea that her desires for adventure and freedom from small town mentality stemmed from her sexuality.

The thought of her meaning her sexuality has never crossed my mind before. Neither does the words to any greater lengths send me thinking about what she could have meant now.
The scene (imho) speaks of her wanting to find herself and all her want's and need's in life, which does include but is not limited to her sexuality. I don't think she had a clue at that specific point, but it might have been a sort of wakeup call, for sure.
