Seriously, part of the paper I mentioned was read at the Savannah PCAS conference year before last. Seemed to connect well with our audience. Eventually I want to publish the thing in its entirety either as part of a book or in one of the media studies journals like "Intensities."

Sounds excellent. I'm happy to help with the XWP studies project too, any way I can: I hereby formally toss in my chakram. At this time I'm completing a semi-academic paper called "Playing's the Thing: the Role of Myth in the World of 'XWP'" It messes with the episode called "The Way" and advocates the flexible, cut-and-paste nature of myth and XWP.

Oh, that's a good idea: getting together to discuss the papers when we're done somehow online. And yeah, I agree with you, LK; I think that keeping the fan stuff and the academic stuff in separate venues is a better idea. I just meant, nobody put him/herself down, 'cause you (we) are all capable of writing Xena-related papers--these threads demonstrate it.

Oh, and I found the thread in question. It's in archives so I can't bump it...but I think this thread alone...

But who knows, if we get this thing off the ground, a Xena studies conference may not be far behind!

Since we have a lot of people spread out all over the world, maybe we could consider some kind of virtual conference. There's so much wonderful technology out there now that this may be feasible to pull off. We do webinars in the work I do so it's pretty cool to have someone half way around the world going...

Just to give you a little update:

This fall, Jenn and I are going to unveil a revamped version of the xwponline website, with a new episode guide and other resources. The "Xena studies" project will be a part of it. I would like to say late September or early October, but I'm notoriously bad with deadlines, so I'm not going to make any promises.

In response to elsie, I really don't think that the conventions are a good venue for putting out a call for...

Everytime this thread pops back up I get all excited about it! This could be incredibly cool if we get it off the ground. And I agree with Elsie, maybe we could try building interest by having a call for papers at the conventions.

I also agree with Darth that "Gabrielle is by far the most interesting character in the series." When I first started watching Xena, I was asked who I like more: Xena or Gabrielle. I thought about it and thought about it and came to the...

Seriously, there's no reason we couldn't write an academic journal of our own. When I first got into Buffy, my friend Jenna would send emails for calls for papers on Buffy subjects. And I was always kind of intimidated (plus, I didn't have the time), so I never tried to write one. But we've called up most of the major philosophical subjects on this board in the past few weeks....

Very interesting thread, there should be a Xena one if theres a Buffy.

But I like Buffy and Xena equally, I know alot of people here like Buffy as much as Xena. Heck we should start a similarity/differences Xena/Buffy thread here.

Inspired by LadyKate's thread around the lack of XWP scholarship, I've been taking another look at Xena stories lately. "Fallen Angel" and "Seeds of Faith" are such a lovely couple. The optimism and connections generated--even Callisto comes around nicely--are totally cool. Presents a very inviting view of the Xenaverse.
Then we move on to season six wherein our hero meets a most unfortunate ending.

I ate the Buffy series as it was chocolate. I was around 12-13 when they broadcasted the show here, and I loved it. I think its perfect for preteens. But as a teenager I found it very very borring, heavy and did I mention borring? Xena is much more fun, but only because the crew doens't take itself to seriously. And thats probebly also the reason why there are no Xena studys.
