Xena and Ares raising Callisto would have been very funny to watch.
But again I don't think Eve is Callisto. Being her reincarnation does not make someone the same person. I think of Eve and Callisto as two separate persons

Excellent response LK, I couldn't have said it better. I too believe that she sensed he was around. Like Ares usually says, she's the only person that can tell when he's near by. I think Xena didn't see the ice cave move from Ares because this one happened before Coming Home. I think it was only until Coming Home Xena realised how much she meant to Ares. The original plan was for her to drink the poison. The gods would see her dead and leave. Octavius and his buds would ride up and take them away. Xena's plan changed the minute Ares should up on the wagon. She knew he'd be around---stabbing herself to draw him to stop her and then drinking the poison in front of him proved to the gods she was "dead" serious.

What happened next was a miscalculation on Xena's part. She misjudged Ares's feelings for her. She...

On a related note, it just occured to me that Ares didn't scoop up Eve's body along with Gab's when he zapped them to the ice cave.

We know the real baby was with Octavious, but did Ares?

As to how Xena knew Ares would pop in, I have to go with the idea that since he'd *been* popping in on her, she figured he wouldn't just go away once it looked like things were coming to a head.

But I will always be puzzled as to why she assumed he would...

i often wondered that myself. dont know how she knew, she just obviously did! i guess she always knew the power she had over Ares, just didnt dare admit it. i think she took a gamble too to some extent

maybe she knew ares was going to bury her somewhere but thought either he would let gab on the beach (so that once she woke up she could find her body) or that he wouldn't bury her and gab in an unknown place (so that octavius could save them).

As if the fall itself wasn't bad enough (it did "kill" Gabrielle and Eve, supposedly) why did Xena have to survive that only to talk with Ares??

I think she needed to survive to make it more believable. I mean if they had all died in the crash, there might have been suspiscion by the Gods at whether it was true or not. By stageing her grief and suicide, it helped concrete the fact that the others were gone.

I think she knew he was always close, if not always watching, whenever the other gods were hot on their heels. She could smell him, after all.

But why else would she need him there at all? The sword caught his attention, but for what use? So that he could run to the others and say they needn't worry...

Sentimental is right...esp with him burying Gabrielle alongside her.

I guess they may have figured he would leave them for Joxer or someone else to bury, and yes underestimated him.

Hmm, maybe she did think that Octavius would ride in and claim the bodies and it didn't occur to her that Ares would have any particular interest in her corpse at least as long as he knew she'd be properly buried.

Maybe she underestimated his sentimental side.

Well no...I guess she was expecting Octavius to take them away. He did ride up afterwards and know of the plan.

I don't think she would have considered Ares doing that.

Still doesn't explain why she didn't bank on being trapped in an ice cave for 25 years, and didn't think about Ares possibly burying her...yikes. Thank god they went with the ice cave.

...that Ares would show up to stop her in Looking Death in the Eye from stabbing herself with her sword? I mean, if her and Gabrielle had planned to fake their deaths, she had to have known he would stop her or her death would not have been 'fake' of course.
