I believe Tapert inserted symbolism thats misinterpreted as a "ghost" appearance of Xena to Gabrielle at the end of FIN II. It was only to allow visual affirmation Xena was with Gabrielle (not meant as a ghost, now you see her now you don't). It was simply symbolic (very creative I might add).

I do not think there was ever any intent Gabrielle appear a nutcase talking to a Xena-ghost or talking to herself. Such interpretation...

Even if Xena wasnt there its no weirder than when Hercules talks to the various gods and no one else can see them

Well, if we're using that as a theory, then yeah, I agree with that, Jolly. I don't think there was ever a ghost there--not that Gabrielle had gone crazy per say but Xena wasn't actually there. Who knows? Her conversation with Xena could have not actually happened as a "conversation". Meaning, that whole experience on the ship could have been her mind wandering off, thinking of Xena, and that, in her mind, she's talking to her and just reaffirming that...

I'm liking...is it Nutty's?...insanity theory. There was no ghost. It was just an insane Gabrielle talking to herself and the figment of her imagination. It doesn't make sense because it doesn't make sense. Gabrielle lost her marbles somewhere in-between gaining a chakram and losing a Xena.

Xena died in Japan, so technically she's a Japanese-style ghost, maybe they can't read thoughts like the Greek ones because she's not in Elysia or Tartarus.

Hmm, would it matter what afterlife she was bound to? Whenever someone said "the dead can hear our thoughts" I took it as "the dead" in general, not merely the dead in Elysium or Tartarus.
Hmm, I didn't think of ghosts being bound to mortal laws if on Earth....

Maybe the dead can only hear your thoughts if they're in the Land of the Dead (wherever that may be). If they're ghosts and technically standing "with" you in the land of the living, then they are bound to the laws of mortality and therefore, can't read thoughts.

Do ghosts strictly speaking have the powers of telepathy? I thought that was quite different. Plus that wouldn't quite have the same on screen presence.

So at the end of AFIN we see Gabrielle talking to what is either Ghost Xena or imagining that she is seeing Xena on the boat. If Xena really was a ghost and Gabrielle wasn't just thinking about her, then why couldn't Ghost Xena (or GX for those who like abbreviations) just read her thoughts? This was inspired by a story I read after the end of the show, but I have noticed that other stories feature Gabrielle and Ghost Xena conversing instead of GX just reading her thoughts. If Xena...
