Ya know, the whole Anokin storyline always confused me greatly. I always assumed there was originally a longer story planned and it got cut somewhere along the way, being as it was buried in a plot heavy episode. LadyRowanD and LadyKate, I think you both have good points about the way that sexuality in Xena's time was different, and that there really was no "Xena's time," since it was all a fantasy world. I enjoy setting different Xena stories up against the "real" versions of events--in particular, When in Rome and One Against an Army in the ep of the week threads.

I think that the Xenastaff created a world that was partially true...

I liked the whole evil Xena and Ares mix. I mean, they were freaking hot together. The power. The passion. The hot post-battle sex....

But now she's all good (yawn), meh, I don't really see her with anyone. She's too much of a loner, and I think is too scared of letting anyone in anymore. Other than the friendship she has with Gabby, because it's like a safety blanket for her.

Personally I would say that Xena's sexual attraction to the male of the species right up until the end of the series is established far more definitively than her bisexuality. Even if one may argue that the extent of her attraction to Ares is somewhat ambiguous, her response to Antony (IMO) is not. I think we're also meant to infer that she's genuinely turned on by Lucifer, though personally I don't buy it for a second from their onscreen...

When trying to classify Xena by our modern conceptions and definitions of straight/lesbian/bi, I think we also need to keep in mind the society and times in which she lived. I don't have any problem with Xena being bisexual, but I don't think anything was "firmly established." Unfortunately the whole Anokin episode was so confusing and rushed that it's really hard to make heads or tails of it. I also didn't notice any lip-licking on Xena's part -- yeah, Anokin's demeanor in the tent is very sexualized (and/or drugged...), and at one point Xena appears to give her a carnal look... but I thought that overall she was far more...
