Okay, this dead horse I guess has become glue now. The only thing I want to say is that I didn't mean to imply that straight people are clueless or something. That's not what I meant at all. Yeah, it's all subjective and if nothing else, we've come away with that. I do have to say that I think hearing all of these different POVs has helped me to be more understanding. Well, I still have to disagree (leaving aside the question of how many teenagers today truly see sexuality as "fluid"). I guess the bottom line for me is, X/G as a platonic friendship is no less (and no more) a "reality" than as X/G as a lovers' relationship, so people who see them as friends aren't "missing" anything -- just seeing it from a different perspective; it's not a question of "not recognizing" a gay relationship any more than...

Few days ago I was talking about Xena with some non Xena fans. One of them, a girl, said that she watched it when she was 8 years old, and she was impressed by the fact that Xena was having a love affair with Gabrielle. She said: Xena is a lesbian. This was the reason why she did not like it, and she did not carry on watching the show.
Now, I think this can be an issue for some people and it depends on their education.

I think if I had of watched the show past the age of 14 it would've registered with me (I'm 19 now) but I watched it when I was 10,11, and 12 (originally) and started rewatching at 17 (I saw the subtext immediately - saw altered states) but under that age for me I probably would never have noticed, I just didn't have a detector, and yet I watched it and loved it, and other shows which now I have gone and can see gay references, but I didn't recognise them in the sense of...

I think there is also the issue that as you grow up you're very unaware of gay relationships, though visual awareness of lgbt couples and people has improved on television. When I was growing up it was literally unheard of and therefore your brain does not even compute that such a relationship can exist until you get a bit older, more aware of your own sexuality and how broad it all can be.. not just necessarily that teenagers see friendship as more important. Re the Najara and Brunhilda jealousy issue... well, Xena was actually going to leave Gabrielle with Najara, until she learned that Najara was killing people who would not convert.

She was, but I don't think that necessarily excludes Xena from feeling jealous about how close Gabrielle was with Najara. Or the fact she thinks Najara is better for Gabrielle. Jealousy is often a bit illogical, after all.
