Shindler's List because it is true. It's a good movie, not one I've ever wanted to watch again though.

Also, after seeing the original The Hitcher, I avoided scary movies for a long long time.

I've seen Salò and really did not rate it highly or any similar films that seem to be purely about pushing the boundrys of taste for some misguided sense of entertainment. If you view most of the films that were banned by the BBFC in the video nasty fiasco in the 80's with the notable exceptions of the Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and one or two others most were badly made and mainly unwatchable due to the poor photography rather than the onscreen content. actually Hannibal disgusted me. i was ok for most of it, but he should have never, ever, in a million years have feed that guy his own brain and then given some to that lil' boy... yek i almost threw up... mind you Anthony Hopkins is a brilliant actor!

I find The Pianist to be pretty disturbing.

Probably most of all because it actually happened. If you don't know, it's based on the Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman's autobiography, of how he survived the holocaust. It's epic man.

And it uses Chopin on the soundtrack all the way through. You couldn't get more perfect music.

Oh geez, Caligula! That wasn't even "disturbing" really, just... sick and disgusting IMO. Still don't understand what good actors like Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren and John Gielgud were doing in that monstrosity.

I can usually watch a lot of movies that would fall under the banner of 'disturbing' but two which I can say I've seen once and would not choose to see again because I felt real dirty afterwards was Calligula and The Last House on the Left. Those two movies were really messed up and bothered me for some reason.

A film that I find disturbing but have not watched all the way through yet, and I don't have any real plan to, is Kids by Larry Clark.

I taped it years ago when It was first aired and I was watching something else on another channel but would flick to it during the ad breaks and saw enough to know I did not want to watch it all. The main scene that freaked me out was the rape scene at the end. It's probably the least violent rape scene that will be mentioned in these posts...

Most of the movies that disturbed me have been listed (Audition, Irreversible, movies I loved) and I'd like to add Monster. Thats the same for me Twinks. And I think the same for most women more than men.
I can watch stuff people being cut in two and all sorts of horrible stuff, but rape or anything like that is just unbearable to watch for me.

Scary, scary Roman Polanski film, 1968 I think, about a teenage girl who stays alone for a weekend in an apartment she normally shares with her older sister and gradually goes completely insane, haunted by hallucinations based on her fear/disgust/morbid fascination with sex.
