More monsters. Bigger monsters. Scarier monsters.

Hercules' fighting style didn't lend itself well to fisticuffs, but it was a blast seeing him taking on big bad beasties. It's too bad the show had such a limited budget; I would loved to have seen him take on something like the Cloverfield monster.

Heracles had a club on him ever since he defeated the Nemean Lion. When he became Omphale's slave, she dressed in his lion skin and brandished his club around her palace while he was forced to wear women's clothing. The crazy Roman emperor Commodus emulated Hercules and beat up animals in the arena with a club and lion skin.

Hi all. I'm new. But if you read Bulfinch's Mythology, Hercules never used any weapons. He was just a really strong guy. They made Xena up completely so they had more freedom in developing her fighting style. Hercules could have probably kicked more, but he was like 10 times stronger than any human so probably didn't need to.

Somehow I doubt that happened, although I didn't watch Andromeda that much. In the first ep, however, as he was kicking the you-know-whats of an attacking crew, one of them triend to explain, saying "He was huge... like a Greek god or something!"

For anyone who watches Andromeda, is it true that one ep Sorbo picks up a giant fake rock and throws it at someone and says "Oops, wrong show"? Hahahaha!

Joxerfan, it would have been funny if Herc had a nemesis who said "I can beat you. I know all your moves!" And then did some the trademark Herc stuff. It would have been nice to see Herc say something like "I need some new moves."

Hercules was big and just threw people around. I'm not sure what else they could have done to make it better considering his size. Throwing people around, spinning them over his head, knocking them against each other--was about the best you could do with someone Hercules' size and with his strength.

Yep, plus that is the character of Hercules - a big guy with a club and a lion skin. I thought they did exactly what they could/should to...

I always found Iolaus' fighting style the most fun and interesting because he was just so acrobatic in the way he fought, flipping around people, getting on their shoulders and punching them in the face. He was just a lot more agile than Hercules and he used a bit of the martial arts technique at times, too. Hercules was big and just threw people around. There was that wonderful moment from one of the tv movies that was in the opening credits every week, where Herc actually did use a club to take down a giant much larger than he.

They didn't do a huge variety of "normal" fights against bad guys, but that was balanced by all the diverse fights against giant beasties like Echidna, the she-creature, the sea serpent that menaced Alcmene's wedding, assorted minotaurs, the big snake that Herc and Auto fought, the big...

I doubt they could give Herc a weapon because he was meant to be more kid-friendly and not risk stabbing people in combat. Ironic that the mythical Hercules carried a giant club to bash peoples' brains in. Iolaus had a sword but he openly stated that he was against killing and more often than not used it to disarm bad guys before giving them a few good right hooks.

The Jackie Chan thing didn't really work well for Xena but where Herc and Iolaus can inject a bit of humour...

One reason I started leaning more toward Xena was that her character had a greater range of action. She could flip, kick, use special weapons. While I liked Herc's fights at first, they never seemed to evolved and over the course of the series--in light of what Xena could do---got boring. I even remember reading and interview where one of the creators said the Herc fights were boring him as well.

So..what could they have done to make the fights better? Give Herc a weapon?...
