Xena uses this a lot, get it wet (the towels ofcourse, get rid of your other thoughts my friends) and then use it to knock down the attackers. In Between the Lines, I love the way she makes a stick of it. I didn't mind the whip, but I thought it was over-used in "Daughter of Pomira" which seemed to be a very whip-heavy episode. Also, as others have mentioned, Xena's use of the whip was always telegraphed in advance because she would suddenly be carrying it around on her belt/side.
