Besides all the other praiseworthy things in here I loved this exchange

She quirked a gentle smile as she entered his space, a moment of something akin to shyness passing between them in the first inklings of nearness. "Hey," she said softly, and he smiled.

"Hey," was all he could muster in reply

Just because I would never imagine any kind of shyness between them two and it works so well.

Like the part about her coming to him and then disappearing, I thought was about their unconsummated encounters.

Oh reading this makes me want to quote one of my favorite passages from this story:

She kissed him first, but not enough words were spoken.

Her kisses were far softer than he had expected. Sometimes.

They communicated in touches....

Also, I meant to say that a couple of these points were actually written out more obviously in the early drafts of the fic, but it got too "plot-expositiony" and got snipped for artistic effect.

I think it's good you didn't spell it out -- usually, less is more, in these cases.

ETA: Just re-read the story and wow, I'm struck all over again by how great it is.

Whoa. The way you captured Ares was just so amazing, especially that you did it so well with both sides of man/god. And how you represented Xena through his eyes, I could totally understand how a god would fall under that spell and give up his immortality to be enveloped by it. And the Gurkhan twist was a very interesting one.

Tango and I were just discussing this story on Messenger (she's left a comment on your livejournal) and we were wondering -- what is it about the beating in WG that makes it different from all the other times Xena's been tortured, beaten, etc., and that seems to leave her in a much more fragile emotional state than she usually is, even in the aftermath of pretty horrific experiences?
