The omission of Ares and Eve fron FIN bothered me a lot too. I remember waiting for them, expecting them. But I think he'd explore all other possible options first, both because I think by then he knows how devastated Xena will be by Gabrielle's death, and because he knows he will not get a warm "thank you" from her if he saves her life at the cost of Gabrielle's.

Here's an interesting fanfic (though subtexty, or rather bitexty I suppose) with Ares by the side of a dying Xena... I could see something similar happening in that vision.
