I agree, thats one of the things that annoyed me, Virgil never to be seen again and mentioned.

But personally season 6 as a whole annoyed me, theres a huge lack of mentions of any characters who had died or were not seen again. I cant recall any Joxer mentions, unless I'm missing something. At least You Are There did make-up for it and Hercules and Veleska were mentioned.

Good point, Thanagarian. I'm glad they didn't go with that. But it still kind of ticks me off the way the character just disappeared.

Although Virgil's story is open ended,(William Gregory Lee in Dark Angel) i prefer that to the nonsense that was Americe's death.(Jennifer Sky in Cleopatra 2525) Killed off screen and mentioned as a throwaway line in a bad episode.
Virgil was spared that.

Yeah, maybe he was busy helping Meg take care of his younger brothers and sisters.

Maybe Virgil went to stay with his remaining family members in Athens? I know he said that all the way back in 'Motherhood', but it's possible that when he wasn't with Xena and Gabrielle he went back to his family.

Well, the real reason Virgil disappeared is that William Gregory Lee got a gig on Dark Angel.

It does kind of annoy me that TPTB never bothered to come up with an explanation for his disappearance.

However, I would think that if he died trying to get through the ring of fire to save Gabrielle, this is something that would have gotten mentioned on the show....

I don't know if this has already been mentioned by anyone in the past, but I recently thought up of a possible reason to Virgil's sudden disappearance in season 6. Perhaps Virgil was one of the many young men who tried to kiss Gabrielle in "Return of the Valkyrie", but got burned up & died by the fire.
